Get Down Jones and the Delegation

So it’s Friday. Your week was brutal; phone calls, friend’s breakups, kids, sinus problems, the usual suspects. It’s Friday and you have one plan; not to think about any of those things again until absolutely necessary (or until it’s time for your medicine.) In fact, you want to think about nothing. There will be drinks (plural) and you want to dance, it’s only natural. You deserve it. It’s what you’ve been looking forward to all day and nothing is getting in your way, damn it.
Get Down Jones and the Delegation is here for you, sugarlamb.
Together for almost a year, having an estimated 100+ years of musical experience between them, all they ask in return is that you “come on out, bring your friends, get ready to kiss a stranger and have a night you’ll remember for a long time.” That’s not really asking all that much is it?
Born of a dank, rat hole of a basement in Southeast Portland, friends and Barney Murnin started Get Down Jones and the Delegation for fun; something to give their friends and family something fun to do. As a result, Sunday rehearsals are more like get-togethers, a family dinner if you will-as long as your dinner is the blues with a giant dollop of rock and roll on the side and a sweet choir girl gone funk for dessert. They have since graduated to a very nice, not at all dank living room.
Having played for something close to two decades with his musical father, Barney cites everything from “death metal, funk, to BB King, Albert King…all the Kings” as his influences, along with the band’s official statement on what makes them make music: “being broke, counted out, let down, ripped off, misused, bad woman troubles and being too damn drunk. We have been trying to mix in some instant karma recently, but it has a tendency to backfire on us…”
Hoke, having played professionally during the Seattle punk rock era, likes Portland because “you never know what’s going to happen. So many different walks of life come out and makes for a really good show. Portland has the best audiences, it’s the coolest place.”
They were able to convince Barney’s godfather Zack Zacharia, (day job: guitar tech for Robert Cray) to join in. “The guitar shark attack” writes many of the songs, and has played in funk and disco bands complete with horns sections. This is the kind of experience that keeps them out of that same old bar band sound. Seriously? He says BB King played at his high school, “long before the stool days” he laughs.
They picked themselves up “REAL bass player” (compliments of his band mates) Pat Murnin the Grand Poppa of the bass guitar and a Portland music scene vet. He played in rock bands when he was younger because, he jokes, “there was no such thing as the blues back then.”
Excited that they were attracting some talent to their band, they began work on Dean Failry a local music scene veteran piano man. Dean gave in and completed the Delegation.
So with families and (ahem) day jobs, “we all work really hard and we want to give all our hardworking friends a reason to all come out together” says Barney “and Portland has it’s own Blues scene separate from Chicago and Mississippi and New York so we’re working to put our own face on the NW.”
The rock and the roll and the blues and those distinct vocals, it’s revival time and they aren’t stopping till they have exorcized all that nasty stress, baby. So trust them with your Friday night. It’s what they do. You deserve it.

Other influences include being broke, counted out, let down, ripped-off, getting took, bad women troubles, and being too darn drunk.

If you want to know what the blues is, well, the blues is a feeling. If you ever loved someone so much that it made you sick, if you ever loved someone so much that it made you crazy? then you might know what the blues is. Have you ever loved someone so bad that nothing ever felt like home again until you were back in their arms? then you know just what the blues is people.

blues is that loneliness that makes it hard to stand up sometimes. When your heart hurts from the things you said to her, so bad you cant get up off the floor, that’s the blues. And the blues can be a very bad thing if you let them get a hold of you. you’ll find sooner or later that all that late night drinking and smokin cant make one damn dent in them blues either.

If you love someone, you better tell someone, otherwise one day you might not need me to tell what the blues are all about. Take care of each other for me. GDJ

Back in origonal form, a good example of who you should vote for president. Get Down Jones dont take no shit, off a nobody. Might as well dump out your HaterAid and then fill that bottle with Vodka and cranberry. it’ll look the same cept you’ll be cussing in the yard all night. And with due cause, besides, WWGDJD– Kick em n the nuts Portland style until their clown shoes fly off. Woah! ask Roots Brewery if Get Down Delegation smoked their joint like no other. I got to give one out to Chao (Big Ceez) Longoria, Rueben, Jo-Jo and even E-rock, hell all yall, for pumping it up on the south side while we were steppin out. Good to know some real home boys were stepping in. Hey, I hope to see ya soon, when we touch down home. Like I promised we are gonna get some free tracks up on the sight soon as the law allows. Keep those eyes peelt cause we are comming. OUT!

We in the trenches drumming up them blues for all y’all to feel good about your Saturday nights. Go ahead drink something, smoke something and situate yourself for what’s about to go down. Know you rights- cause The Get Down Delegation is ready to tear this whole city apart piece by piece. Keep an eye out for our show dates.. Get added to our lists. We are coming to your city and your towns. Making the rounds to liberate you right. Leaving only a trail of ashes and Pabst Blue Ribbon cans. This aint England.. and we aint the Rolling Stones, muther F*%$er this is south east ….Portland…. and I’m Get Down Jones.

Get Down Jones does recomend kissing strangers on the mouth. However he is not a doctor, and although he has played doctor on several occasions he can not be held responsible for the actions of anyone brave enough to take his advice.
